Stages Of Steel Guard Nanocoat TM

Stages Of Steel Guard Nanocoat TM

Steel Guard Nanocoat TM acts on the martensite layer of the TMT rebars and forms a NANO COMPOSITE (Coat is generated from the martensite portion and Nanocoat does not form a layer / film on the surface separately.

There are 3 major physical stages of Steel Guard Nanocoat TM while it transfers from liquid steel guard to a strong, hard and tenacious crystal on the martensite surface.

STAGE 1: In the beginning, Steel Guard Nanocoat TM possess a low viscosity , just like water when it is in contact with steel.

STAGE 2: Upton the 1st 4 – 6 hours, Steel Guard Nanocoat TM while reacting with steel makes a complex crystalline structure, becomes very sticky & viscose before the formation of fully mature crystals.

During this stage, water and other solvents in the formulas get evaporated and due to this evaporation and continuous reaction, Steel Guard Nanocoat TM becomes very sticky & viscose before the competition of the whole process.

STAGE 3: In this stage after 6 -10 hrs. though the Nanocoat seems to have dried, it does not dry actually and the process of forming Dense Forest of Micro Crystals is at its top speed. This process continues for the next 14 hrs. i.e. total of 24 hrs.

At this stage, Steel Guard coated surface should not come in contact with water because the prematurely developed micro crystals gets hydrated and change their colour to chalkish white.

Therefore, for the formation of inseparable NANO COMPOSITE, curing of 24 hrs. is essential. However, this curing time can be reduced further by applying different methods.

Rust Resistance - Steel Guard Nano Coat TM

Rust Resistance - Steel Guard Nano Coat TM

Huge losses are incurred due to corrosion and rusting. Many rust preventers / protectors  / primers or epoxy topocoats are available but are never cost effective.

Rust is oxide and hydroxide of iron formed on the metal surface. Fe(OH)2 andFe2O3.H2O. Rusting occurs due to an electrochemical reaction with iron in presence of moisture and Oxygen. Iron acts as Anode and other metallic impurities acts as Cathode. Electrolyte is formed by conductive salts in water to complete the electrochemical reaction.

Rust puffs up and forms flakes and scales further exposing the under surface to free Oxygen. Thus the new exposed surface gets converted into iron oxide in humid atmosphere. This process goes on continuously destroying the steel completely.

This is particularly evident in all solvent based primers, which do not allow the surface moisture on the metal surface to dry or evaporate and thereby creates conditions for rust formation.

The best way to prevent corrosion will be then to stop formation of Fe2 and Fe3 ions and prevent their migration in the electrolyte to Cathode. We propose to do exactly that with our unique Steel Guard NanocoatTM

On application of Steel Guard NanocoatTM on steel surface, it penetrates into very fine cracks, pores and crevices and reacts with free iron particles to form complex Nano crystals.

These crystals are so tenacious that it becomes inseparable part of iron, This layer does not allow iron to form Fe ions. This prevents initiations of rusting. Moreover special water repellent formula of Steel Guard NanocoatTM does not allow water to invade in the steel.

The structure of these nano crystals are of such that it increases bonding with any coating applied on the surface including paint / galvanising / epoxy and even concrete. This further increases life of the protective coating and thereby that of steel.

Increase Bonding Strength - Steel Guard Nanocoat

Increase Bonding Strength - Steel Guard Nanocoat

Reasons for decrease in the Bonding Strength:

Corrosion is a major problem in steel. Formation of rust on structural steel decreases its life, after reinforcing it with concrete mixture. It is an established fact that corrosion is the deadliest enemy of any reinforced structure. Moisture, seepage / ingress of water causes frequent corrosion on steel. Structural cracks are observed, which is an indication that the bonding of steel with concrete has been weakened / separated due to creation of rust and these are subject to normal conditions all TMT bars.

Reasons for the Increase in Bonding Strength after applying “Steel Guard Nanocoat TM

TMT bars treated with “Steel Guard Nanocoat TM are free from corrosion. “Steel Guard Nanocoat TM is a revolutionary invention based on Nanotechnology (Micro Crystal Development Technology) wherein it works at the molecular level by penetrating inside the pores of the surface. It creates a Dense Crystal Formation (Frost) protective layer consisting of millions of nuclei. This layer acts as a barrier between the applied surface and atmosphere stopping the formation of Fe2 & Fe3 ions, which are the main agents of corrosion. The Crystal layer thus formed is so closely interlinked & interwoven that it does not allow water & gas to penetrate inside. This phenomenon prevents corrosion and ultimate result in an increase in the bonding strength of steel with concrete. The detailed reasons for are mentioned below:

  • When Steel Guard comes in close contact with steel, it starts reacting with Fe2 and Fe3 ions and bond them in such a way that further conversion of Fe2 & Fe3 ions into hydroxy carbonates i.e. rust is totally prevented.

  • Simultaneously, billions of nuclei are formed on the surface and micro crystals start growing around them. This forms a very tenacious attachment with the sub stratum resulting in a formation of highly complex crystalline structure on the steel surface.

  • During this process, a dense forest of micro crystals is developed on the steel surface which has a great affinity towards cement as well as steel. Finally , the Nanocoat becomes inseparable part of steel and remains unaffected even up to 600 degrees Celsius and stable up to -196 degree Celsius.

  • MCDT (Micro Crystal Development Technology) mentioned here indicates that each crystal nucleus of Steel Guard Nanocoat TM has the power of attracting other cement molecules to it by the virtue of crystal forces and forms a TRAP for all these molecules which do not possess sufficient energy to escape.

  • Chemisorption is another important reaction which is taking place during the reaction where molecules are held on the steel surface by a chemical bond formed between the Nanocoat & steel molecules. The heat of absorption is very high and is difficult to reverse the process i.e. only heating to high temperatures can reverse the chemisorptions.

  • Each crystal of Steel Guard Nanocoat TM is cubic shaped (like crystals of diamond) with a four threefold axes which helps to increase the adherence to steel & concrete simultaneously.

  • Another important reason for the increase in the bonding strength by more than 300% is Nanocoat's physiochemical structure, due to which the active chemical formulation hides the dense forest of micro crystals inside and form a chemical net which attracts minute cement particles. This forms a strong bond between steel & cement.

Scratch Resistance - SteelGuard Nano Coat TM

Scratch Resistance - SteelGuard Nano Coat TM

After coating any steel with SGn , it becomes highly scratch resistant since the coating thickness is only 0.2 microns and the above layer is the complex crystal arrangement which is formed within the surface and not above it .

Due to its high scratch resistant properties , SGn coated materials can withstand much higher wear & tear even in highly corrosive conditions as compared to others . Since even a hair size space is sufficient for the surface to start corroding , this unique property of SGn gives your steel a much durable & longer life.

Phosphate Treatment Vs Steel Guard Nano Coating

Comparative Performance Evaluation of Steel Guard “nanocoat” with Phospate Treatment of Iron & Steel for protection against Corrosion.

Phospating  Treatment

Steel Guard “nanocoat” Treatment

Remarks

Phospating process is classified in 5 (Five) classes i.e. Class A1 (Heavy Weight) , Class A2 (Heavy Weight) , Class B (Medium Weight) , Class C (Light Weight) , Class D (Extra Light Weight) as per IS : 3618 - 1966 in accordance to the nature of protection required.

Steel Guard is single handedly capable of taking care of all the types of protection provided by the different phospating processes.

Steel Guard is a superior because as a single product, it can take care of multiple aspects.

The process consists of 5 (Five) stages i.e. Surface Preparation, Phospate Treatment, Rinsing , Drying and Sealing

The process essentially consists of 3 (Three) stages i.e. Surface Preparation, Steel Guard treatment and drying. Sealing with organic coatings are required only for extreme heavy duty corrosion protection purposes.

Steel Guard is an economical and time saving product as the process requires a lesser number of stages.

The strength of the phospating solution, measured as Pointage is to be checked periodically and the repleshiment is to be done accordingly.

No checking of the strength of the Steel Guard solution is required and it is suitable for repeated use without any replacement due to the lack of strength.

Steel Guard is superior since it highly economical and very less supervision is required.

After phospating , the organic sealing by paint , varnish or lacquer is to be done immediately. If an interval is unavoidable between the first stages of sealing, the phospated components shall be stored under conditions that
preclude contamination & condensation of the moisture on the surface. The above stipulation is under IS : 3618 -1966 , clause 4.6.

After Steel Guard treatment, no organic sealing is immediately required. The coated material can be left without any organic coating under any atmospheric
condition week after week.

Steel Guard is much superior in terms of protection against corrosion.

Heating arrangments are required for phospating.

No heating arrangements are required whatsoever.

Steel Guard is much more economical and less time consuming.

Phospated material gets corroded within 24 hours without sealing.

Steel Guard coated material shows no sign of corrosion even after 15 days.

Steel Guard is much superior in terms of protection against corrosion.

Cross Cut Test - Steel Guard Nanocoat TM

Cross Cut Test - Steel Guard Nanocoat TM

Cross Cut Test :

To check the Adhesion of any paint & primer with the substrate of the surface to be painted, Cross Cut Test (ASTM D 3359) is to be conducted to check the adhesion & bonding of the paint with the surface.

The mentioned picture explains the entire Cross Cut Test process wherein cuts are made (Both Horizontally & Vertically) with the help of a blade and then with the help of sticky plastic papers & cellotapes the cross cutted portions are peeled off.

The results can be evaluated in terms of the nos. of squares which adhere to the paint. If the nos. of squares attached to the plastic paper is high, the adhension is said to be poor and if the nos. of squares attached to the plastic paper is less, the adhesion of the paint with the substrate is said to be higher & good.

The results of the above Cross Cut Test need to be classified on the basis of the below mentioned 5 categories which are as follows:

Cross Cut Test conducted on Normal Phosphate Coating :

Cross Cut Test conducted on Steel Guard “nanocoat” Coating :

The above mentioned results clearly state a much better performance of Steel Guard coated surface as compared to normal Phospating process and we can safely conclude that Peeling of the paint from the substrate will be reduced drastically , which will thus lead to a much higher corrosion resistance over a long period of time.

FAQ - Steel Guard Nano Coat TM

FAQ - Steel Guard Nano Coat TM

Q) How does “Steel Guard Nanocoat™” work?

“Steel Guard Nanocoat™” i works by forming a protective layer, consisting of millions of nuclei. On application of “Steel Guard Nanocoat™” i, a very compact & complex crystal arrangement is formed which creates a barrier between the surface & atmosphere, stopping the formation of Fe2 & FE3 ions which are the main agents of rusting. Peripheral Crystallization takes place along with Vertical Crystallization which results in a arrangement being “generated” through the surface and not above the surface. It acts on a molecular level penetrating into the very fine cracks & pores of the metal, forming a layer of water soluble compound which protects it from rusting.

Q) How does “Steel Guard Nanocoat™”stop the formation of rust?

Rust i.e. Ferrous Hydro Carbonates are formed when Fe3+ions react with water & CO2.“Steel Guard Nanocoat™”  forms a complex crystal coat through the surface which is insoluble in water and closes the free valences of fe3+ ions. These micro crystals create their own space within the molecular gap of iron avoiding the formation of micro Anodes & Cathodes, thus prohibiting rust to form on the applied portion.

Q) What are the different stages “Steel Guard Nanocoat™” goes through after applying it on the surface ?

There are 3 major physical stages of “Steel Guard Nanocoat™” while it transfers from liquid steel guard to a strong, hard and tenacious crystal on the martensite surface.

Q) How does “Steel Guard Nanocoat™” improve the bonding strength of Steel ?

The Micro Crystal arrangement formed on application of “Steel Guard Nanocoat™” is so close & interwoven that it does not allow water & gas to penetrate. Such arrangement takes place in vertical, horizontal & lateral sides creating a tenacious & compact bond thus improving the bonding strength of steel with concrete, cement, paint & any external coat. The bonding strength increases 100% to 300% when the nanocoated construction steel is mixed with cement concrete.

Q) Doesn’t water in the presence of oxygen cause the metal to corrode or rust?

Yes, it does but the water used in “Steel Guard Nanocoat™” contains a rust inhibitor which prevents this from happening.

Q) Will “Steel Guard Nanocoat™” wash off in rains?
